What type of surfboard to choose based on your level?

Quel type de planche de surf choisir en fonction de son niveau ? - HawaiiSurf

Camille Bouyer |

At HawaiiSurf, we know that choosing your first surfboard when you're a beginner is not always easy. Shortboard or Longboard, what's the difference? We will describe below all the characteristics and dimensions of each board so that you can quickly understand the specifics of each one. Before getting to the heart of the matter, a small infographic is necessary. This will allow you to easily distinguish the different shapes and types of boards that we will present to you in this article. The illustration also highlights board models that we offer at HawaiiSurf: Torq, Venon and Mdns Surf.

Let's go back to the timeline of the visual. The smallest and lightest boards are the most difficult to maneuver. They are therefore to be preferred for experienced and skilled riders, unlike longboards or softboards (which we will present at the end of the article). So we will start with the most technical boards intended for experienced surfers and finish with the boards suitable for beginners. Finally, we will end this article with a video explanation for those who don't like reading too much... Our colleague Laura will explain in a YouTube video how to choose your board according to your level!

Surfboards for advanced/experts

Le Fish Board
The fish is the ideal board for small waves from 0.5 to 1.5 meters. Its wide shape and flat rocker allow for quick surfing on very small waves. Its retro look is a must-have in the collection of an experienced/expert surfer but is not suitable for beginners as it lacks stability.
Le Shortboard

On the shortboard side, it is only intended for surfers with a confirmed/expert profile. It is not suitable for learning this sport because it also lacks stability and speed when paddling. Its very narrow shape and very steep rocker allow surfers to maneuver quickly and generate a lot of speed. Furthermore, this surfboard is ideal for performing in waves from 1 to 2.5 meters with good power.

Surfboards for an intermediate level

The Hybrid
The hybrid board is the very definition of versatility. Its wide shape provides good stability when catching waves, and its angled rails allow for good maneuverability. Great points for beginners who surf occasionally and want to progress to an intermediate level to gradually move towards a shortboard. This board is perfect for small surf in waves from 0.5 to 1.5 meters, but also for medium waves up to 2.5 meters.
Le Funboard

This type of surfboard combines both the maneuverability of a shortboard and the paddling speed of a longboard. However, the funboard does not allow for tight turns. It is the ideal board for having fun and surfing as many waves as possible. It is therefore an excellent option for beginners who now have good stability and want to start experiencing good sensations. The funboard adapts very well to small and medium surf.

Surfboards for beginners

Le Longboard
The longboard is certainly one of the easiest surfboards to maneuver. Its exceptional length and width provide perfect stability as well as very good paddling speed. As you can understand, it is the ideal board for a beginner who has never, or very little, practiced surfing. Again, this type of surfboard adapts well to both small and medium surf, so to waves from 0.5 to 2 meters.
Le Softboard

If you want to take a surf lesson at a school, you won't escape the famous softboard! This surfboard is ultra stable, easy to paddle quickly, and above all, it is SAFE. Its soft PE (Polyethylene) foam and soft fins help reduce impacts during falls. Moreover, it should be noted that more and more softboards are increasing in performance and will satisfy both beginners and regular practitioners.

Now that you are familiar with all the characteristics of the different board shapes and your level, you are ready to choose your first surfboard. For those who read less, we have also prepared a YouTube video. Enjoy watching!

To conclude, a person who has never surfed before will naturally turn to a longboard to start their learning. If you have already taken a few lessons and your stability is good, then it's time to switch to a funboard to perfect your technique!
