Gordon Merchant, founder of the brand, is an Australian surfer who arrived on the Gold Coast in the 70s. Throughout his surfing career, he was at the heart of innovation, notably being one of the first to produce surfboards with tucked-under edge rails, which was revolutionary at the time. He was also the first to develop the leash! Later, with his partner Rena, they were the first to make handmade boardshorts, with triple stitching to withstand the harshest elements.

Little by little, they created the brand Billabong (referring to a typically Australian natural phenomenon!). However, very quickly, the brand became too important to continue producing from home. They therefore invested in a modern factory and that is where the adventure really began! Years later, the company grew and exported to California, Japan, Europe, and New Zealand. Gordon wanted to maintain superior quality even while exporting his business, so he established strict standards by surrounding himself with surf industry experts (Wayne Bartholomew, Joe Engel, Taj Burrows, and Ronnie Burns).

Little by little, Gordon understood the effect of the seasons on his brand and his competitors. He wanted to change things, so he turned to all sliding sports to no longer be affected by the seasons.
